Core Text — Bava Basra 111a

English: Our Rabbis taught: “And every daughter who inherits a possession from the tribes of the children of Israel” — how can a daughter inherit two tribes? Rather, this is one whose father is of one tribe and whose mother is of another, and his daughter inherits them both. From here [we learn] that a daughter inherits her mother, and all the more so a son.

Type of Learning

Daughter inherits from mother; a fortiori a son inherits from mother.

What Is Learned

Maternal inheritance is transmitted to a daughter (and therefore also to a son), allowing an heiress of mixed tribal parentage to inherit both lines.
