Core Text of Chazal / Mefarshim

Ramban —

English: Scripture’s concern was only to fix that generation’s division. The Torah would not command that son and husband not inherit — it would not uproot the law of inheritance. And according to our Rabbis who expounded “this matter shall apply only in this generation,” it is possible that in the entire generation that entered the land there were no other heiresses besides the daughters of Tzelofchad.

Type of Learning

Ramban — scope of the intra-tribal marriage rule; refusal to uproot inheritance law.

What Is Learned

The ban on inheritance “revolving” tribe-to-tribe is a temporary fence around the first allotment, not a permanent override of son/husband inheritance. Chazal’s limit to that generation matches the practical reality of the conquest-era heiresses.
