English: Our Rabbis taught: The daughters of Tzelofchad are wise, are expounders, are righteous. Wise — they spoke at the right moment… Expounders — they said: Had they had a son we would not have spoken… Righteous — they married only those fit for them.

Type of Learning

Bavli narrative midrash on the character of the heiresses whose case triggers the Gilad petition of 36:1–3.

What Is Learned

The petition of the Gilad heads in 36:1–3 is the tribal response to the daughters’ successful claim. The Gemara’s praise of the daughters as wise, expounding, and righteous frames why their inheritance required the corrective of intra-tribal marriage in this chapter.
