Core Text — Bava Kama 28a

English: It was taught: From where [do we know] that a bored [Hebrew slave] whose term has ended, and his master presses him to leave, and he [the master] wounded him and made a bruise — that he is exempt? From “you shall not take ransom to return” — and [likewise] you shall not take ransom for one who is to return.

Type of Learning

Extension of the no-ransom principle to the case of a released slave pressed to leave.

What Is Learned

The verse’s language is used to exempt a master who injures a slave whose term has already expired when the master is forcing the departure.
