Core Text — Makkos 11b

English: It was taught: If he died before the High Priest died, they bring his bones to his ancestral graves, for it is written “the murderer shall return to the land of his possession” — what dwelling is in the land of his possession? Say: burial.

Type of Learning

Posthumous return of the exile’s bones to the family plot.

What Is Learned

Even if the unintentional killer dies in the city of refuge before the High Priest, his remains are transferred to the ancestral burial ground as the fulfillment of “return to the land of his possession.”
