Core Text — Makkos 12a

English: Why does Scripture say “goes out, goes out”? To teach: if he left intentionally he is killed; if unintentionally he goes into exile [again].

Type of Learning

Double language distinguishing intentional vs unintentional exit from the city of refuge.

What Is Learned

Leaving the city of refuge deliberately makes the killer liable to death at the avenger’s hand; an accidental exit merely restarts the exile obligation.
