English: It was taught: if a blemished [priest] served, his service is invalid. From where? Rav Yehudah said in the name of Shmuel: as the verse says “Behold, I give him My covenant of peace” — when he is whole, not when he is lacking. But it is written “shalom”? Rav Nachman said: the vav of shalom is broken (keti’a).

Type of Learning

Halakhic derash from “bris shalom” and the broken vav.

What Is Learned

Priestly service requires physical completeness; the broken vav alludes to defect excluding valid avodah.
