Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And he took a spear in his hand.” From here [we learn] that one does not enter the study-hall with weapons — he drew its blade and placed it in his belt, and leaned and walked on his staff.

Type of Learning

Halakhic norm of the beis midrash derived from how Pinchas carried the spear.

What Is Learned

Even in zeal, the house of study is not entered armed — the weapon is concealed until the act.
