The Complete Passuk

I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near; a star shall tread from Yaakov, and a scepter shall rise from Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moav and undermine all the sons of Sheth.

Core Text

English: It was taught: R. Gershon in the name of R. Acha says: “A star shall tread from Yaakov” — from whom does a star tread, and from whom is one destined to arise? From Yaakov.

Type of Learning

Restrictive reading tying the star exclusively to Yaakov’s line.

What Is Learned

The messianic star is not from Yishmael or Esav — only from Yaakov, as already hinted to Avraham in counting the stars.
