The Complete Passuk

God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should change His mind; has He said and will not do, or spoken and will not fulfill it?

Core Text

English: The Rabbis say: He is not a man who treated the words of God as if they were nothing, as it is written, “Why, Hashem, should Your anger burn against Your people”; and “son of man that He should repent” — he is not the son of Amram who caused God to repent, as it is written, “And Hashem repented of the evil.”

Type of Learning

Contrast of divine reliability with human intercession language.

What Is Learned

The verse affirms that God’s decrees are not lies; apparent “repentance” in the golden-calf narrative is not the nullification of a man over God.
