Core Text

Core Text
English of Core Text: “Then Israel sang” — Why is Moshe not mentioned there? Because he was being punished on account of the waters, and no person praises his own executioner.
On the daf / in context: The song is sung at the end of the forty years; the well that had accompanied them from the beginning descends into the Arnon wadis to reveal the miracle of the crushed enemy troops, then Israel calls it to rise. Moshe’s absence from the song is midrashically linked to his punishment at Mei Merivah.
Type of Learning: Narrative derasha / song without Moshe
What Is Learned: The Song of the Well is Israel’s alone; Moshe is omitted because of the water-related decree, and the well itself announces the hidden miracles of Arnon.
