This is the statute of the Torah that the Lord has commanded, saying: Speak to the children of Yisrael, and they shall take to you a red heifer, perfect, in which there is no blemish, and upon which a yoke has not been laid.

Source Citation

Torah Temimah: Sifrei Zuta — “Temimah” means perfect in redness. Or is it merely free of blemishes? But it already says “in which there is no blemish.”

Sefaria — Sifrei Zuta

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: Perfect in redness. Or is it only [that it must be] perfect regarding blemishes? But it already says “in which there is no blemish.”

Type of Learning

Resolution of apparent redundancy to establish the redness standard.

What Is Learned

“Temimah” requires that the heifer be uniformly red; even two black (or non-red) hairs disqualify it, beyond the ordinary rule of blemishes.
