Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “You shall give to Hashem a gift” — this teaches that there must be in it the measure of a gift. From here they said: the measure of challah for a householder is one twenty-fourth, and for a baker one forty-eighth.

Type of Learning

Gift-size grounds the rabbinic fractions.

What Is Learned

Because it must be a real matanah to the Kohen, a householder’s smaller dough needs a larger fraction than a baker’s large batch.
