מֵרֵאשִׁית֙ עֲרִסֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם תִּתְּנ֥וּ לַיהֹוָ֖ה תְּרוּמָ֑ה לְדֹרֹ֖תֵיכֶֽם׃

From the first of your dough you shall give to Hashem a gift throughout your generations.

Torah Temimah / Sifrei: “from the first” — part, not the whole dough as challah.

Core Text

״מֵרֵאשִׁית עֲרִיסוֹתֵיכֶם״ — מִקְצָתָהּ וְלֹא כֻּלָּהּ.

English: “From the first of your dough” — part of it and not all of it.

Cannot designate the entire dough as challah.

The mem of “from the first” requires that some ordinary dough remain; the whole mass cannot be declared challah.
