Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: Did they sin forty years? They only sinned forty days! Rather, to teach you: whoever commits a transgression even one day in the year, Scripture counts it as if he transgressed the whole year.

Type of Learning

Measure of punishment expanded from day to year.

What Is Learned

The day-for-year principle also teaches how a single day’s sin can be weighed as a year.
