Source Citation

Rashi (from Sifra) — “impure” here means unfit for the altar (e.g. blemished), not necessarily a non-kosher species; the kohen assesses it.

Sefaria

Chazal

English: “If any impure animal” — not only a non-kosher species, but also a blemished animal unfit for offering; he presents it before the kohen, who sets its valuation.

Type of Learning

Lexical / halachic clarification — tum’ah relative to the altar.

What Is Learned

“Impure” in the context of vows is functional: anything that cannot ascend the altar enters the valuation-and-redemption track rather than the sacrificial track.
