Source Citation

Sifra, Bechukotai, Chapter 6:5 — desolation is a measure of good: the foe will find no solace in the emptied land.

Sefaria

Chazal

English: “And I will make the land desolate” — these are propitious tidings, so that Israel will not say: “Since we have been exiled from our land, now the foe will come and find solace therein.” Therefore it is written “and your foes who dwell upon it will be appalled by it” — even the foe that comes afterwards will find no solace therein.

Type of Learning

Paradox / measure-for-measure consolation — desolation protects the land’s honor.

What Is Learned

Exile is bitter, yet the land itself will not become a comfortable prize for the nations; their occupation will feel the same emptiness.
