Core Text

English: During the destruction Eliyahu found a child who refused the Shema, drew his idol from his bosom, and died upon it — fulfilling “I will cast your carcasses upon the carcasses of your idols.”

Type of Learning

Narrative / fulfillment derasha.

What Is Learned

The verse’s image is not abstract: attachment to idolatry reached the point that a child died embracing his idol rather than recite the Shema.
