וְכִ֣י תַשִּׂ֗יג יַ֣ד גֵּ֤ר וְתוֹשָׁב֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ וּמָ֥ךְ אָחִ֖יךָ עִמּ֑וֹ וְנִמְכַּ֗ר לְגֵ֤ר תּוֹשָׁב֙ עִמָּ֔ךְ א֥וֹ לְעֵ֖קֶר מִשְׁפַּ֥חַת גֵּֽר׃

וְכִי תַשִּׂיג יַד גֵּר וְתוֹשָׁב. מְלַמֵּד שֶׁיֵּשׁ קִנְיָן לַגֵּר.

English: “And if the hand of a stranger and resident attains…” This teaches that a ger has the capacity to acquire [a Hebrew servant].

Classical derasha (Sifra / Bavli Kiddushin).

A resident stranger who prospers may purchase a Hebrew servant who has fallen into poverty.
