כְּשָׂכִ֥יר כְּתוֹשָׁ֖ב יִהְיֶ֣ה עִמָּ֑ךְ עַד־שְׁנַ֥ת הַיֹּבֵ֖ל יַעֲבֹ֥ד עִמָּֽךְ׃

Core Text — Sifra / Kiddushin

כְּשָׂכִיר כְּתוֹשָׁב יִהְיֶה עִמָּךְ. מְלַמֵּד שֶׁנּוֹהֵג בּוֹ מִנְהַג כָּבוֹד.

English: “As a hired worker and a resident shall he be with you.” This teaches that one must treat him with the dignity of a hired worker.

Classical derasha (Sifra / Bavli Kiddushin).

The eved ivri is to be treated with the respect due a hired worker or resident, not as property.
