Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Bava Metzia 59a

English: “And you shall fear your God.” Rabbi Yochanan said in the name of Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai: Verbal ona’ah is more severe than monetary ona’ah, because concerning this one “and you shall fear your God” is said, and concerning that one “and you shall fear your God” is not said.

Type of Learning

Classical derasha (Bavli Bava Metzia).

What Is Learned

Verbal ona’ah is treated as more severe than monetary ona’ah, because the Torah attaches the warning “fear your God” specifically to the verbal prohibition.
