EXTRA 2 on Acharei Mos 18:25

Side-ring EXTRA · Why personal sins affect the Land

Source

Ramban addresses the difficulty: arayos are matters of personal conduct, yet Scripture ties them to the Land’s defilement and expulsion of its inhabitants. He roots the answer in the unique status of Eretz Yisroel as Hashem’s portion.

Core Text

Core Text — Ramban on 18:25

English: The secret of the matter is in the verse “for Hashem’s portion is His people” — the Land of Israel is unlike other lands; it cannot tolerate idolaters or those who practise arayos.

Type of Learning

Land as Hashem’s portion

What Is Learned

Because Eretz Yisroel is designated as Hashem’s own portion, the moral quality of its inhabitants directly affects the Land’s capacity to retain them. Personal impurity becomes territorial impurity.
