English: “Beside the altar”: this means when the altar is whole, not when it is deficient. From here the Sages derive rules about eating offerings when the altar is damaged.

Type of Learning

Textual limitation — “beside the altar” limits the permitted place of eating and establishes the rule for an altar that is intact.

What Is Learned

The phrase “beside the altar” is understood to require an intact altar for eating the remainder of the meal offering, and the same principle is extended to other most-holy offerings.
