Core Text

English: When they saw the new fire, they sought to add love upon love. The Sifra reads the verse's wording as teaching that they did not honor Aaron, did not consult Moses, and acted independently rather than consulting one another.

Type of Learning

Textual close reading — The Sifra derives several teachings from the precise wording and repetitions of the verse.

What Is Learned

The Sifra presents several distinct failures in Nadav and Avihu's action: excessive zeal, failure to honor Aaron, failure to consult Moses, and acting without consulting one another. This is a substantially different learning path from the existing Sforno EXTRA.
