וַתֵּ֥צֵא אֵ֛שׁ מִלִּפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָ֖ה וַתֹּ֣אכַל אוֹתָ֑ם וַיָּמֻ֖תוּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהֹוָֽה:

וַתֹּאכַל אֹתָם. שְׂרֵפַת נְשָׁמָה וְגוּף קַיָּם.

English: “And it consumed them.” The fire consumed their souls while their bodies remained intact.

Textual interpretation — the Chazal derives the teaching from the wording or structure of the verse.

The teaching attached to ותאכל אותם states that the fire consumed the soul while the body remained intact.
