תַּנְיָא: צִרְעָה לֹא עָבְרָה עִמָּהֶם. וְלֹא? וְהָא כְּתִיב: ״וְשָׁלַחְתִּי אֶת הַצִּרְעָה לְפָנֶיךָ״! אָמַר רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן בֶּן לָקִישׁ: עַל שְׂפַת יַרְדֵּן עָמְדָה וּזְרָקָה בָּהֶם מָרָה, וְסִמְּתָה עֵינֵיהֶם מִלְמַעְלָה וְסֵרְסָתָן מִלְּמַטָּה, שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר: ״וְאָנֹכִי הִשְׁמַדְתִּי אֶת הָאֱמֹרִי מִפְּנֵיהֶם ... וְאַשְׁמִיד פִּרְיוֹ מִמַּעַל וְשָׁרָשָׁיו מִתָּחַת״. רַב פָּפָּא אָמַר: שְׁתֵּי צִרְעוֹת הֲוַי, חֲדָא דְּמֹשֶׁה וַחֲדָא דִּיהוֹשֻׁעַ; דְּמֹשֶׁה לֹא עָבַר, דִּיהוֹשֻׁעַ עָבַר.

English: It was taught: The hornet did not cross with Israel. Rabbi Shimon ben Lakish explains that it stood at the Jordan and cast poison at the Canaanites, blinding them above and castrating them below. Rav Pappa says there were two hornets: one associated with Moshe, which did not cross, and one associated with Yehoshua, which did.
