English: Rava said to Rabbah bar Mari: From where is the saying of the Sages derived that one should rise early and eat in summer because of the heat, and in winter because of the cold? The verse teaches: “You shall serve Hashem your God” refers to the Shema and prayer; “and He will bless your bread and your water” refers to bread with salt and a pitcher of water; from there onward, “I will remove illness from your midst.” It was taught: “Illness” refers to the gallbladder; it is called machalah because it contains eighty-three ailments, and all of them are dispelled by bread with salt in the morning and a pitcher of water.
