Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Pesachim 36b

English: “Bread of affliction” excludes challut and ashishah. One might think that only coarse bread qualifies, but “matzot” is repeated to include even refined matzah like Solomon’s. “Bread of affliction” nevertheless excludes challut and ashishah.

On the daf / in context: See the cited source for the full section.

Type of Learning

Derash balancing the inclusive repetition “matzot” against the limitation expressed by “bread of affliction.”

What Is Learned

Refined matzah can qualify, but specified forms characterized as challut or ashishah do not satisfy the requirement of “bread of affliction.”
