וְשָֽׁכַבְתִּי֙ עִם־אֲבֹתַ֔י וּנְשָׂאתַ֙נִי֙ מִמִּצְרַ֔יִם וּקְבַרְתַּ֖נִי בִּקְבֻרָתָ֑ם וַיֹּאמַ֕ר אָנֹכִ֖י אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֥ה כִדְבָרֶֽךָ׃

But when I sleep with my fathers, thou shalt carry me out of Mitzrayim, and bury me in their burying-place. And he said: I will do as thou hast said.

טֹל עִמִּי מֵעֲפַר מִצְרַיִם. מִכָּאן אָמְרוּ: הַמּוֹצֵא מֵת מֻשְׁכָּב כְּדַרְכּוֹ — נוֹטְלוֹ וְאֶת תְּפוּסָתוֹ.

English of Core Text: “Take with me of the dust of Mitzrayim.” From here they said: One who finds a corpse lying in its normal manner takes it and its “grasping” (tefusah — the surrounding earth).

On the daf / in context: Nazir 65a derives from the superfluous words “from Mitzrayim” that Yaakov asked to be taken up together with some of the Egyptian soil. The same measure of earth (tefusah) is required when relocating a corpse found lying in ordinary posture.

Type of Learning

Diyuk on extra language — the word “from Mitzrayim” is not needed for the simple sense and therefore teaches the taking of soil together with the body.

What Is Learned

When removing a corpse that is found lying in the ordinary manner, one takes the body together with a measured amount of the surrounding earth (tefusah). The verse supplies an asmachta for this halachah.
