The land of Egypt is before you; settle your father and your brothers in the best of the land — let them dwell in the land of Goshen. And if you know that there are capable men among them, put them in charge of my livestock.
English: “Put them in charge of my livestock.” Rabbi Yosei opened with the honor due to a host and taught: if the Egyptians, who welcomed Israel only for their own benefit, nevertheless teach us through this verse that “you shall not abhor an Egyptian, for you were a stranger in his land,” then one who hosts a Torah scholar, feeds and gives him drink and benefits him from his property, all the more so deserves honor.
