And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof; and Pharaoh told them his dream, but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh.

וַתִּפָּעֶם רוּחוֹ. רַבִּי יוֹחָנָן אָמַר, הַחֲלוֹם וְלֹא פִּתְרוֹנוֹ, רַבִּי יְהוֹשֻׁעַ בֶּן לֵוִי אָמַר, הַחֲלוֹם וּפִתְרוֹנוֹ.
English of Core Text: “And his spirit was troubled.” R’ Yochanan said: [He remembered] the dream but not its interpretation. R’ Yehoshua ben Levi said: [He remembered] both the dream and its interpretation [yet still found no satisfaction until Yosef spoke].
On the daf / in context: The midrash explains the agitation of Pharaoh’s spirit as either partial or complete recollection of the dream, setting the stage for the failure of the Egyptian interpreters and the necessity of Yosef.
Type of Learning: Derash on the verse (classic midrash) — not a formal named middah of the 13.
What Is Learned: Even when a dream is recalled, the absence of a true interpretation leaves the spirit troubled; only the interpretation that comes from the one whom Heaven has prepared brings peace.
