And much as she coaxed Joseph day after day, he did not yield to her request to lie beside her, to be with her.

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “To lie beside her” — in this world; “to be with her” — in the World to Come. From here R’ Eliezer said: whoever commits one sin — it is bound to him like a dog.

On the daf / in context: The doubled language of the verse is split between this world and the next; sin is not a one-time event.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Parallel verbs are assigned to two worlds.

What Is Learned

A single sin of this kind ties itself to a person across this world and the next.
