Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And they said to one another: Behold, that master of dreams is coming” — come, let us kill him, and we will see what will become of his dreams.

In context: The title “master of dreams” is spoken in scorn; the midrash makes the challenge explicit.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bereshis Rabbah) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Mocking epithet becomes the motive-line of the plot.

What Is Learned

They treat the dreams as the offense itself: kill the dreamer, and the dreams die with him.
