The man said, “They have gone from here, for I heard them say: Let us go to Dothan.” So Joseph followed his brothers and found them at Dothan.

Source Citation

Classical source (EXTRA side-ring): Bereshis Rabbah 84:14.

Sefaria — Bereshis Rabbah 84:14

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “They have traveled from here” — they traveled away from brotherhood. “Let us go to Dosan” — they sought pretexts of words against you, that you be judged by them.

In context: The angel’s directions are midrashically charged: Dosan is read as a place of legal plots (das / din).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bereshis Rabbah) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Place-name and departure are moralized.

What Is Learned

The brothers have left fraternity; Dosan is the arena where they will frame a case against Yosef.
