וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם יַעֲקֹ֜ב בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ אֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֣ם מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֔יו וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֹתָ֖הּ מַצֵּבָ֑ה וַיִּצֹ֥ק שֶׁ֖מֶן עַל־רֹאשָֽׁהּ׃

And Yaakov rose early in the morning and took the stone that he had placed at his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top.

וְיִצֹּק שֶׁמֶן עַל רֹאשָׁהּ. לְהַכִּירָהּ בְּשׁוּבוֹ.

English: And he poured oil on its top — so that he would recognize it when he returned.

On the daf / in context: Ibn Ezra explains the oil as a distinguishing mark for the stone when Yaakov would return.

Derash / classical peirush — not a formal named middah of the 13.

The oil serves as a recognizable mark, connecting Yaakov's action at the time of departure with his eventual return.
