וַיִּקְרָ֛א אֶת־שֵֽׁם־הַמָּק֥וֹם הַה֖וּא בֵּֽית־אֵ֑ל וְאוּלָ֛ם ל֥וּז שֵׁם־הָעִ֖יר לָרִאשֹׁנָֽה׃

And he called the name of that place Beis-El, but Luz was the name of the city at first.

בֵּית אֵל – בֵּית אֱלֹהִים. וְלּוּז הָיָה שְׁמָהּ מִקֹּדֶם, וְיַעֲקֹב חִדֵּשׁ אֶת הַשֵּׁם עַל שֵׁם הַקְּדֻשָּׁה שֶׁנִּתְגַּלְּתָה לוֹ.

English: Beis-El – house of God. Luz was its name previously, and Yaakov renewed the name on account of the sanctity that was revealed to him.
