Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And Yaakov went out from Be’er Sheva and went toward Charan.” This departure was for the sake of two mitzvos: to fulfill the words of his father and to fulfill the words of his mother.

On the daf / in context: The midrash notes that the journey simultaneously satisfied Yitzchak’s command (to take a wife from the family) and Rivkah’s protective instruction.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bereshis Rabbah) — not a formal named middah of the 13. One action fulfills two parental directives.

What Is Learned

Yaakov’s departure accomplished both his father’s command regarding marriage and his mother’s concern for his safety.
