So Efron’s land in Machpelah, near Mamre—the field with its cave and all the trees anywhere within the confines of that field—passed

English: One who sells a field has not sold the grafted carob or the sycamore trunk, for the verse says “and the field of Efron… which was in all its border round about” — [only] that which needs a surrounding border; these [large trees] that do not need a surrounding border are excluded.

On the daf / in context: Bava Basra discusses what is included in the sale of a field. Large, independently significant trees are not automatically conveyed with the field; the verse’s “all its border round about” is read as limiting the sale to items that belong to the field’s perimeter definition.

What Is Learned

A simple sale of a field does not automatically include large free-standing trees such as a grafted carob or a sycamore trunk; only items that form part of the field’s bordered extent are included unless specified.
