Core Text

English: “And Avraham called…” This teaches that Avraham our father saw the Temple built, destroyed, and rebuilt. “And Avraham called the name of that place ‘Hashem will see’”—behold, built; “as it is said to this day, ‘On the mountain of Hashem’”—behold, destroyed; “it will be seen”—behold, built and perfected in the future.

On the daf / in context: The layered wording of the name is read as three successive visions of the Temple’s history.

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Sifrei) — not a formal named middah of the 13. The place-name is parsed into three temporal stages of the Temple.

What Is Learned

Avraham foresaw the Temple built, destroyed, and rebuilt; the three clauses of the verse correspond to those three stages.
