“And as the dawn rose.” Rabbah bar bar Chanah said in the name of Rabbi Yochanan: From the break of dawn until sunrise a person can walk five mil. As it is written, “And as the dawn rose the angels urged Lot…,” and it is written, “The sun rose upon the earth and Lot came to Tzoar.” And Rabbi Chanina said, “I myself saw that place, and it is five mil.”
Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13. Narrative timing yields a practical measure of distance and time.
From dawn until sunrise a person can walk five mil; the distance from Sedom to Tzoar, covered between those two moments, establishes the measure.
