And it shall be, when the Eternal your God gives you rest from all your enemies round about \ldots you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens; you shall not forget.

Source Citation

Torah Temimah and classical sources point to the harmonization of the two “blot out” verses (Exodus 17:14 and Deuteronomy 25:19).

Primary locus: Pesikta de-Rav Kahana / Midrash Tanchuma / Sifrei.

Sefaria — Pesikta de-Rav Kahana 3:15

Core Text of Chazal

English: Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said in the name of Rabbi Alexandri: One verse says “you shall blot out the memory of Amalek,” and another verse says “I will utterly blot out.” How are these two texts to be reconciled? Before they raised their hand against the Throne, “you shall blot out”; once they raised their hand against the Throne, “I will blot out.”

On the daf / in context: The midrash resolves the apparent tension between the human obligation and the Divine declaration by distinguishing stages of Amalek’s aggression against Heaven.

Type of Learning

Derash reconciling parallel verses (midrashic harmonization) — the two formulations of blotting out are assigned to successive stages of Amalek’s offense.

What Is Learned

The obligation “you shall blot out” applies while Amalek has not yet struck at the Divine Throne; once that threshold is crossed, the blotting out becomes a Divine act (“I will blot out”).
