When brothers dwell together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the dead shall not be outside to a strange man; her husband’s brother shall come upon her and take her to himself as a wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother for her.

רַבִּי אָבִין בְּשֵׁם רַבִּי יוֹנָתָן אָמַר: מִנַּיִן שֶׁאֵין הַכָּתוּב מְדַבֵּר אֶלָּא בְּאַחִין מִן הָאָב? שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר כִּי יֵשְׁבוּ אַחִים יַחְדָּו – אֶת שֶׁיְּשִׁיבָתָם בְּבַיִת אֶחָד.
English: Rabbi Avin said in the name of Rabbi Yonatan: From where do we know that Scripture speaks only of paternal brothers? As it is said “When brothers dwell together” — those whose dwelling is in one house.
On the daf / in context: Maternal brothers belong to different paternal houses; only paternal brothers share a single household framework for inheritance and yibbum.
