Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: ‘You shall not muzzle an ox’ – the prohibition of muzzling applies equally to an ox and to every domestic animal. What is the reason? We derive ‘ox’ from ‘ox’ in the Sabbath commandment.

On the daf / in context: Bava Kamma 54b extends the muzzling prohibition beyond the ox by gezerah shavah with the detailed list of animals in the Decalogue.

Type of Learning

Gezerah shavah (ox / ox) — R’ Yishmael #2.

What Is Learned

Although the verse names only an ox, the prohibition against muzzling while working applies to every domestic animal.
