Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “And you hang him on a tree” — one might have thought whether hung or not hung; therefore Scripture says “for a hanging body is a curse of God.”

On the daf / in context: Only those executed by stoning are subsequently hung. The other death penalties do not include hanging of the body.

Type of Learning

Derash limiting hanging to certain categories of condemned.

What Is Learned

Hanging of the body applies only in the cases where the Torah associates the death with “a curse of God” (primarily stoning for blasphemy and idolatry).
