יֶרַח יָמִים – מִכָּאן סָמְכוּ חֲכָמִים לְאֲבֵלוּת שְׁלֹשִׁים יוֹם.

English: “A month of days” — from here the Sages derived support for the thirty-day period of mourning.

On the daf / in context: Rambam cites this verse (via Yerushalmi) as an asmachta for the standard thirty-day mourning period that applies after the death of a close relative. The same fixed length appears in the captive-woman law.

Type of Learning

Asmachta (scriptural support) for the thirty-day mourning period.

What Is Learned

The thirty-day mourning period observed after the death of a relative finds scriptural support in the “yerach yamim” of the captive woman.
