And she shall remove the garment of her captivity from upon her, and she shall remain in your house and weep for her father and her mother a full month; and afterward you may come to her and possess her, and she shall be your wife.

English: “And she shall weep” — this applies only when she has not accepted (the commandments); but if she has accepted them, he immerses her and she is permitted to him at once.

On the daf / in context: The thirty-day mourning period is required only if she remains attached to her former life. Once she accepts the Jewish faith the special mourning rites are unnecessary (though the three-month waiting period for distinguishing pregnancy still applies according to many authorities).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli) — conditional limitation of the mourning requirement.

What Is Learned

If the captive woman accepts conversion, the thirty-day weeping period is not required and she may be immersed promptly.
