Core Text of Chazal

Core Text
וְשָׁבִיתָ שִׁבְיוֹ – לְרַבּוֹת כְּנַעֲנִים שֶׁבְּתוֹכָהּ.

English: “And you take captives from them” — to include Canaanites who are among them (even of the seven nations living outside the Land).

On the daf / in context: The extra word “shivyo” is otherwise redundant. Sifrei and the Gemara use it to teach that Canaanites dwelling outside Eretz Yisrael may be taken captive; if they later repent they are accepted. Inside the Land the rule “lo sechayeh kol neshama” still applies.

Type of Learning

Ribbui (inclusion) from the superfluous word “shivyo.”

What Is Learned

Canaanites living outside the Land may be taken captive in an optional war; if they convert they are accepted.
