כִּֽי־יִמָּצֵ֣א חָלָ֗ל בָּאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהֹוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ נֹתֵ֤ן לְךָ֙ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ נֹפֵ֖ל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה לֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע מִ֥י הִכָּֽהוּ׃

If a slain person is found in the land that the Eternal your God is giving you to possess, lying in the field, and it is not known who struck him.

Torah Temimah points to Sotah 45a.

Core Text

בָּאֲדָמָה אֲשֶׁר ה׳ אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ – בְּאֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל.

English: ‘In the land that the Eternal your God is giving you’ – in the Land of Israel.

On the daf / in context: The rite is limited to Eretz Yisrael.

Derash on territorial scope (Bavli) — the language ties the law to the inherited land.

The ceremony of the eglah arufah applies in the Land of Israel; it is not performed outside the Land.
