Core Text

English: ‘And you dispossess them and dwell in their cities and in their houses’ – at a time when Yisrael dwell on their land.

On the daf / in context: The full force of the cities-of-refuge laws applies when the people are settled.

Type of Learning

Derash linking the institution to settled life (Sifrei) — the cities of refuge presuppose dwelling in the Land.

What Is Learned

Once Yisrael has taken possession and dwells in the cities and houses of the Land, the system of cities of refuge is to be established and maintained.
