The Complete Passuk

וְהָיָ֗ה הָאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־יִשְׁמַע֙ אֶל־דְּבָרַ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְדַבֵּ֖ר בִּשְׁמִ֑י אָנֹכִ֖י אֶדְרֹ֥שׁ מֵעִמּֽוֹ׃

And it shall be, the man who will not listen to My words that he speaks in My name, I will require it of him.

Torah Temimah points to Sifrei Devarim 177.

TT lemma: אָנֹכִי אֶדְרֹשׁ מֵעִמּוֹ.

Core Text

אָנֹכִי אֶדְרֹשׁ מֵעִמּוֹ – מִיתָה בִּידֵי שָׁמַיִם.

English: ‘I will require it of him’ – death at the hands of Heaven.

On the daf / in context: The punishment for refusing to heed a true prophet is heavenly, not necessarily judicial.

Derash on the consequence (Sifrei) — the language of ‘I will require’ points to divine judgment.

One who refuses to listen to a true prophet speaking in Hashem’s name is held accountable by Heaven.
